“The World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO), initiated by China, will contribute to the establishment of a global governance system for artificial intelligence and promote its development for the benefit of humanity,” Chinese Ambassador to Azerbaijan Lu Mei said at a reception marking the 99th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.
She noted that two weeks earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, where he highlighted the importance of a people-centered approach and called on all countries to promote the positive development of artificial intelligence for the benefit of humankind.
"This approach sets the strategic direction for the future development and governance of artificial intelligence," the diplomat said.
The ambassador said WAICO, launched by China with 29 founding member states, represents an important milestone in AI development. She added that the organization will promote AI capacity building, strengthen global governance cooperation, and advance the safe, equitable, and orderly development of AI for the benefit of humanity.
Lu Mei said WAICO aims to support the modernization of all countries, welcomes new members, and encourages AI cooperation for shared development. She also reaffirmed China's commitment to peaceful development and to resolving differences through dialogue.
