“Railways play a crucial role in economic development. Azerbaijan has contributed to the development of railways in the CIS by implementing new infrastructure projects,” said Azerbaijan's Minister of Digital Development and Transport Rashad Nabiyev during his speech at the 83rd meeting of the CIS Railway Transport Council.
He noted that the cargo terminal under construction in Astara is an example of Azerbaijan’s progress in developing the North-South International Transport Corridor.
“This cargo terminal will be completed and commissioned in 2026. The Zangezur Corridor is a key element of the North-South International Transport Corridor, and infrastructure projects are underway to launch this route. It is planned to transport 15 million tons of cargo per year through the corridor. We are developing and strengthening a common transport policy with partner countries and enhancing cooperation. The development of the transport sector is of great importance for Azerbaijan. By the end of this year, the upgrading of the Sumgayit-Yalama line and the reconstruction of the Alat-Osmanli-Astara line will be finalized. We are also continuing our cooperation with Iran to advance the North-South International Transport Corridor,” the minister underlined.
Rashad Nabiyev emphasized that this project will give impetus to the development of the transport and transit system of the countries in the region.
He also noted that the construction of the Astara terminal is nearing completion and that Iran will provide this terminal for Azerbaijan’s use for approximately 25 years.
