As part of his working visit to Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan's Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeyhun Bayramov has attended an open-ended emergency extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at the ministerial level on the latest developments in the Israel-Palestine conflict zone in Jeddah.
Noting that the latest developments resulting in a serious deterioration of the security situation in the region are a cause for concern, FM Bayramov highlighted that Azerbaijan calls for the cessation of military operations and escalation.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov expressed condolences to the families of the victims, and wished the injured recovery.
The Azerbaijani minister emphasized the importance of protecting civil and infrastructure facilities, as well as sacred places in order to prevent the threat to the lives of peaceful people, as well as the aggravation of the current situation.
Mentioning that Azerbaijan has always been loyal to Islamic solidarity and supports the struggle for statehood of the Palestinian people, he noted that Azerbaijan backs the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on the basis of the two-state solution, with East Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine, in accordance with international legal norms, as well as relevant UN resolutions.
Highlighting Azerbaijan's efforts to eliminate the consequences of the conflict, Minister Bayramov said the country allocated $1.6 million to the UN Middle East Agency in order to support Palestinian refugees.
The FM noted that during Azerbaijan`s chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement, the country paid special attention to the Palestinian problem, and in this regard, the Movement acted towards strengthening the work of the Committee of Ministers on Palestine. FM Bayramov affirmed that Azerbaijan would continue its efforts to achieve a solution to the Palestinian problem in accordance with the norms and principles of international law.
