“A bill has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives that would lift the arms embargo imposed on Azerbaijan many years ago, and I think this is very good news,” Paolo von Schirach, President of the Global Policy Institute and Professor of Political Science and International Relations at Bay Atlantic University in Washington, D.C., told AZERTAC.
“Of course, it will take some time. After a bill is introduced, it must go through the entire parliamentary process, being approved by both the House and the Senate, and finally reach the desk of President Trump, who must sign it to make it law. But its significance lies in the recognition that the situation in the Caucasus is returning to, if not entirely, normal,” he said.
“The people of Azerbaijan are aware that some outstanding issues remain unresolved. However, active negotiations between the governments of Armenia and Azerbaijan are ongoing to settle these matters. Territorial issues are no longer a problem and will not be raised again. It is also positive that the U.S. Congress is taking steps to remove legislation that discriminates unnecessarily against Azerbaijan. Once the law is passed, it will represent another important step in the normalization of relations between the governments of the United States and Azerbaijan,” the expert emphasized.
